The recent news of the H5N1 bird flu finding in sheep in Yorkshire, has put the UK livestock industry on high alert. The case was detected during routine checks at a farm already dealing with bird flu in its poultry and has prompted authorities to issues fresh warnings to farms to remain vigilant regarding biosecurity.
The officials have stated that the risk to other livestock is still considered low, however, they remind farmers to be extra careful with hygiene and report anything suspicious to the Animal and Plant Health Agency. Authorities remain keen to avoid the kind of spread we saw in the US.
This case, detected in sheep, along with what’s been happening stateside, has shown that this bird flu can jump to mammals. However, the risks to people remain low, as it appears the current avian influenza viruses do not spread easily to humans.
It’s worth keeping in mind that the UK poultry industry is still producing a large volume of birds each week, and there remains no issue with eating cooked chicken or eggs.
For those of us in hospitality, it means staying informed. Right now, it doesn’t look like this will cause major supply chain issues, However, it is important to keep track of the biosecurity measures and any potential developments. We’ll keep monitoring things and provide updates as needed.
